Concert Review - Quarter Century Throwdown

DOWN NOLA LIVE

September 2020 marks 25 years since the bayous of Louisiana birthed the heavy sludge titled "NOLA", the debut album of the band DOWN.  These friends, all musicians from well-known bands such as Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, and eyehategod among others put out a thirteen song masterpiece sin September of 1995 that today, 25 years later, is held in high regard throughout the metal community.  To mark the 25th anniversary of "NOLA" Philip H. Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, Kirk Windstein, Jimmy Bower along with Pat Bruders performed the album in it's entirety, Live from New Orleans, streaming it to DOWN fans worldwide.  The event was much more than a concert reuniting these musical giants as it started with several prerecorded segments.  Chief August Creppel of the Houma Nation gave a strong musical performance and a heart felt introduction to his people and their community.  Musical videos of Kirk Windstein's solo album "Dream in Motion", live Down performance at Download Fest, interviews with Philip, Pepper and Kirk talking about the band, Kirk discussing with Philip how he first met Jimmy, and so much more filled time before the concert.  A collage of videos sent in from DOWN fans showing their love for these guys wrapped up the pre-concert montage.  When it was time for the live show, my son and I cranked up the volume as we streamed the Livefrom Event through our tv sound system and sat back to watch this epic concert.  I've seen down several times, the most memorable show for me was in 2012 at Rock on the Range.  My first covering Down as a member of the media.  Completely surreal being in the photo pit only feet away from this band that had bludgeoned my brain with their dirty heavy music for so long.  Tonight's show was my son's first time seeing them perform live.  My son is playing in a band now and throughout this show he was taking notice of just how powerful and dirty DOWN play without being over technical like allot of bands.  DOWN take the seemingly simplest of riffs and make them mean.  And over the 25 years since the release of "NOLA" the riffs from "Hail the Leaf", "Losing All", "Lifer", "Stone the Crow", and "Temptation's Wings" all stand out still to this day.    For this show, the band sounded so much like the record.  Spot on performances by all with Philip belting out his lyrics like the seasoned master that he is.  Kirk and Pepper together......switching between riffs and rhythms.....so fucking solid.  Every time I see these two perform, whether it's together or in their other bands (Crowbar and C.O.C. respectively) they exude fun and enjoyment as if they are playing live for the first time.  Joy and energy, it's so cool to see.  Jimmy and Pat, I mean what can you saw about the duo that keeps these songs rolling.  Several camera angles of tonight's show were stationed on Jimmy and just like Kirk and Pepper, there's no doubt the man is having the time of his life!    Then we have Mr. Anselmo.  His body of work is legendary and throughout all the metal genres he's covered in his bands Pantera, Superjoint, The Illegals, Scour, En Minor, Down and others he always brings intensity, strength and power.  Tonight Philip performed each song from NOLA, even those he admitted were tough to sing, with the subdued rage that keeps bringing the legions of DOWN fans back for more.  Before each song he gave a shout out to a different country where the band has performed, showing gratitude and love for the fans there.  The highlight of the event was the last song, the iconic "Bury Me in Smoke".  During the song Chief Creppel joined DOWN, even take a spotlight moment with his drum and his vocals.  The song wrapped with Pepper, Kirk, and Pat giving up their instruments to others, I assume family or close friends, who didn't miss a beat wrapping up the song.  Feel free to search Youtube for this footage, it's a must see.  After seeing DOWN and the Quarter Century Throwdown I can only hope to see touring resume so Philip, Pepper, Kirk, Jimmy, and Pat can come through Philly and I can hit the pit with my fellow "Lifers".  Setlist: Eyes of the South Hail the Leaf Lifer Rehab Losing All Pillars of Eternity Temptation's Wings Underneath Everything Swan Song Stone the Crow Jail Lysergik Funeral Procession Ghots Along the Mississippi New Orleans is a Dying Whore Bury Me in Smoke  Down are: Philip H. You know it’s DOWN as soon as you hear them. That’s the way it’s always been, and nothing will ever change that. There’s no mistaking those gargantuan riffs, swamp blues leads, crashing drums, and hypnotic howls for absolutely anybody else under the sun. Philip H. Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, Jimmy Bower, Pat Bruders, and Kirk Windstein uphold a certain tradition that countless fans celebrate, expanding their own musical mythos as they leave its pillars intact and untouched.

With a collective resume encompassing Pantera, Corrosion Of Conformity, Crowbar, and EyeHateGod, the quintet puffed out its first haze of sonic smoke from the belly of gritty old New Orleans on the 1995 platinum-selling classic, NOLA. At that moment, they naturally summoned something akin to a ritual, continually partaking in it with critically revered offerings -- Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow in 2002, Down III: Over The Under in 2007, Down IV – Part One in 2012, and Down IV – Part Two in 2014. Their shows built a certain live lore with unforgettable runs alongside Metallica and Heaven & Hell as well as coveted spots on iconic fests like Download, Soundwave, Ozzfest, and so many others forever delivering passionate, powerful, pure heavy music you can feel deep down in your soul.

The Illegals live stream

April 9, 2021......The first time I was able to see Philip H. Anselmo and The Illegals perform live since their trek across the U.S. during the  final Slayer tour.  This performance though was via a Live Stream, something I've been adjusting to since there hasn't been in person live shows in over a year.  But it doesn't matter, whether streaming or in person, any chance to see Philip and his crew of Illegals brutalize the stage it's an event not to be missed!

Going in, the question for me was what would the set list be for The Illegals' "A Vulgar Display of Pantera Live" show.  So much material to choose from and having heard the musicians Philip has surrounded himself with I know The Illegals can pull off ANY Pantera tune, the classics and the deep tracks.

After a violent, high energy set by Aussies King Parrot, Philip and The Illegals kicked off their 18 song set with a stunning performance of the haunting Pantera track "Suicide Note part 1".  Mike DeLeon had his white acoustic guitar dialed in and the tone was so clear and poignant. Not often have I experienced a goose bump moment during the first song of a set but this opening performance chilled me.  There was no audio at the start of the song due to technical difficulties but Philip made good by performing the full song again as the first song of the encore.  En Minor band mate Calvin Dover performed keyboards and sang back up.  Just an incredible and surprising way to kick off this show.

DeLeon traded in the acoustic for his flying V and nailed the signature Dimebag Darrell riff which opens " A New Level".  Philip has changed his on stage presence from stomping and jumping to standing stoic center stage, belting out his powerful vocals and exuding strength and metal icon status.  "A New Level" isn't an easy song to sing but Philip has been singing power vocals like this for years after Pantera, most recently with his band Scour.  Sounded great!

Philip dedicated the set to Dime and Vinnie Paul, the brothers who started Pantera and unfortunately who are no longer with us.  He assured us that the brothers would have wanted the Pantera legacy to continue and I'd like to think Dime and Vinnie would approve of DeLeon and drummer Jose "Blue" Gonzalez filling their parts.  DeLeon nails all the guitar riffs and screams Dime perfected and Blue works his ass off behind the kit handling all of Vinnie Paul's complex drum parts.

The Illegals performed Pantera hits "Becoming" and "Fucking Hostile" just as perfect to the originals as they did with deeper Pantera tracks like "We'll Grind That Axe For a Long Time" and "War Nerve" (a song Philip said was both his favorite and Dime's favorite from the album "Great Southern Trendkill")

In an interview I did with Philip backstage in Allentown in 2015 he said at the time he wouldn't want to perform a song like "This Love" live.  Well, time has gone by and The Illegals killed it tonight.  DeLeon added vocals during the back and forth chorus and man the band simply nailed it.  Such an iconic song that was great to hear live again.

During the encore Philip brought out Calvin Dover again as well as a young fan named Roman to assist with the ultimate Pantera classic "Walk".  Roman was helped to the stage and this young dude was so cool singing along with Phil.  You could see the pleasure and excitement from Roman, and frankly from Phil too.  Phil draped his arm around the young metalhead and he traded vocals with this fan.  A site to be seen and a true inspirational moment.

Watching a streaming concert is not the same obviously as the in person experience, but damn it when you get a group of professionals together like Philip H. Anselmo and The Illegals you still are treated to an amazing night of hardcore metal music!!

SCOUR derives its sound from an intentional minimalist approach. Displaying an emphasis on cohesive song writing and direct composition ideas, exhibited through relentless battery, the band brims with creepy and ominous hooks, dark and macabre vocals, blasting drums, and buzzsaw guitars to get straight to the point. Drawing influences from all extreme entities, SCOUR itself continues to pay homage to some of metal's most prominent acts as can be heard with the 2019 release of their cover of Bathory's "Massacre."

In its short existence, the band has graced the stages of many of the major players in both the mainstream and metal-oriented music festival circuits including Roskilde, Hellfest, Tecate Metal Festival, Maryland Deathfest, and more. As the lineage of its membership suggests, SCOUR continues to be a proverbial force with which to be reckoned both on the stage and in the studio.

Mixed and mastered by Ryan Vincent at Apollo Audio Alternative with vocals and drums engineered by Stephen "Big Fella" Berrigan (Down, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Eyehategod), SCOUR's The Black EP includes guest appearances from Erik Rutan of Hate Eternal, Pat O'Brien of Cannibal Corpse, and actor Jason Momoa (Dune, Game Of Thrones, Aquaman, et al).

The Black EP is available on CD, LP, cassette, and digital formats via Housecore Records in North America and Nuclear Blast Entertainment internationally. Find order options at the SCOUR Bandcamp page at THIS LOCATION, the Housecore Store HERE, and Nuclear Blast HERE.

SCOUR - the extreme metal supergroup featuring Philip H. Anselmo (Pantera, Down, En Minor, et al), John Jarvis (Agoraphobic Nosebleed), Derek Engemann (Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals), Mark Kloeppel (Misery Index), and Adam Jarvis (Pig Destroyer, Lock Up) - will release their long-anticipated The Black EP on Black Friday, November 27th.

Forged in 2015, SCOUR made its debut with the ferocious single "Dispatched." The Grey EP, released via Anselmo's Housecore label, dropped in 2016, followed by The Red EP in 2017. Faster and tighter than ever before, this year's The Black EP serves as the final release of the EP trilogy and is inarguably the band's most ferocious effort to date. Mixed and mastered by Ryan Vincent at Apollo Audio Alternative with vocals and drums engineered by Stephen "Big Fella" Berrigan (Down, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Eyehategod), The Black EP includes guest appearances from Erik Rutan of Hate Eternal, Pat O'Brien of Cannibal Corpse, and actor Jason Momoa (Dune, Game Of Thrones, Aquaman, et al).

"The latest SCOUR is the best SCOUR," proclaims Anselmo. Adds Engemann, "This is our most fierce and ripping album to date. Completing the EP trilogy, The Black EP brings a more mature musical approach without comprising the utter relentless brutality. We've got a few special gems as well that I'm stoked for people to hear."

In advance of the EP's release, today the band is pleased to offer up opening crusher, "Doom," for public feasting. The track includes guest vocals by Jason Momoa and a guest guitar solo by Erik Rutan.

View SCOUR's "Doom" video, created by Paul McGuire of Obscenery Films, at THIS LOCATION.

SCOUR's The Black EP will be released on CD, LP, cassette, and digital formats via Housecore Records (North America) and Nuclear Blast Entertainment (internationally). Find preorder options at the SCOUR Bandcamp page at THIS LOCATION, the Housecore Store HERE and Nuclear Blast HERE.

The Black EP:

1. Doom

2. Nail

3. Propaganda

4. Flames

5. Microbes

6. Subprime

The sound of SCOUR can best be described as a modern reimagining of what primarily became known as black metal mixed with elements of grindcore and bits of punk and thrash. Without getting too caught up in genre classification, the result is a brand of ominously-hued, punishing minimalism that pays proper homage the the originators, without the trappings of being a "throw-back," reimagining the lineage from primitive punk darkness into modernity. This nuanced approach was, perhaps, made crystal clear with the 2019 release of their cover of Bathory's "Massacre."

SCOUR:

Philip H. Anselmo - vocals

Derek Engemann - guitar, backing vocals

John Jarvis - bass, backing vocals

Mark Kloeppel - guitar, backing vocals

Adam Jarvis - drums

En Minor - Album Review

Albums are planned out for the most part over years.  Musicians get together, form a band, discuss ideas, practice until those ideas form into songs, garner label interest, hit the studio, then release their record.  Nobody could have predicted the pandemic that has hit the globe here in 2020, but the stars have aligned to bring us a beautifully solemn record that spews the anguish brought on my today's climate in the form of the new album by En Minor " When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out "

EN MINOR features veteran musicians Philip H. Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint, Scour, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals), Stephen Taylor (Superjoint, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Wovenhand, 16 Horsepower), Kevin Bond (Superjoint, Christ Inversion, Artimus Pyledriver et al), Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod, Down, Superjoint), Calvin and Joiner Dover (The Dover Brothers), and Steve Bernal (former first cellist in the Temple Symphony Orchestra).

With Anselmo's naturally deep vocal register a project such as En Minor seemingly was inevitable.  Each song on  " When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out" is slow and methodical, dark in vocal ambiance and beautiful in musical solemnity.  En Minor's latest video for "Mausoleums" can be viewed  HERE and is a supreme example of the musical direction Anselmo experiments with for this project.  Another decent into the foreboding coldness of the album is the song "Blue" which can be heard HERE.  Each song has multiple layers, building it's depth and despair through emoting acoustic and electric guitars, sinister drums and percussion, brooding strings, and haunting keys.

The album continues it's fierce melancholy focus with songs like "On The Floor".  The guitars provide the constant as other instruments are brought in to add to the funeral procession timing matching Anselmo's sorrowful vocals.  "Dead Can't Dance" features spirited lead guitar and Bower's kick drum/floor tom combo is tribal.  "Disposable For You" has old school outlaw country roots and to start before giving way to ethereal keyboard tones.

You're not going to drive down the highway at ridiculously high speeds or dance the night away while listening to "When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out" by En Minor.  What you will do is descend into your own thoughts lead there by Philip H. Anselmo and his masterful musical mistrels in En Minor.

When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out Track Listing:

1. Mausoleums

2. Blue

3. On the Floor

4. Dead Can't Dance

5. Love Needs Love

6. Warm Sharp Bath Sleep

7. Melancholia

8. This is Not Your Day

9. Black Mass

10. Hats Off

11. Disposable For You

EN MINOR: Decibel Premieres "Mausoleums" Video

EN MINOR: Decibel Premieres "Mausoleums" Video From Project Featuring Members Of Down, Superjoint, Eyehategod, And More; Debut Full-Length Nears Release Via Housecore Records

"The video's sullen sepia tone and time-lapse videography fittingly match the crawling clean guitars and evocative cello. Like the flowers that will inevitably wilt outside the video's titular mausoleum, Anselmo's vocals feel like they're withering with the seasons... " --  Decibel

EN MINOR has unveiled a new video for "Mausoleums." Now playing at Decibel Magazine, the solemn track comes off the project's long-awaited debut full-length, When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out, set for release this September via Housecore Records.

An experimental and eclectic musical endeavor that finds founding frontman Philip H. Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint et al) exploring a softer, graver vocal style, EN MINOR is an honest and deliberate change of pace delivering brooding tales of pain, regret, and sorrow. At once ugly and beautiful, EN MINOR features the collective talents of Stephen Taylor (Superjoint, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Wovenhand, 16 Horsepower), Kevin Bond (Superjoint, Christ Inversion, Artimus Pyledriver), Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod, Down, Superjoint), Calvin and Joiner Dover (The Dover Brothers), and Steve Bernal (former first cellist in the Temple Symphony Orchestra).

Writes Decibel, "In five minutes the song captures the raw, wounded heart of When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out. The video's sullen sepia tone and time-lapse videography fittingly match the crawling clean guitars and evocative cello. Like the flowers that will inevitably wilt outside the video's titular mausoleum, Anselmo's vocals feel like they're withering with the seasons. Not every song on the album is as morose and monochromatic as this single, but there's little sunshine to be found..."

Adds Anselmo, "We were not able to shoot the video we initially had in mind because of the pandemic, but the video rendered is beautifully somber. I'd like to thank the crew responsible for putting it all together and I hope you enjoy it."

EN MINOR's When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out was recorded and mixed at Anselmo's Nodferatu's Lair Studio on the Northshore outside of New Orleans, Louisiana and will see release in North America on September 4th via Housecore Records with Season Of Mist handling the release in Europe and Ward Records handling the release in Japan.

EN MINOR was inadvertently in the making since Anselmo's earliest days as a child in the French Quarter. "The initial strains - in the most primitive sense - came about when I was given my first guitar at nine-years old," relays Anselmo. "I didn't have the patience to learn other people's music, so I wrote my own. And some of those early parts are still prevalent in the songs we're working with now. Fast-forward to 1988 when I bought my first four-track recorder; those old songs took on a new life and newer songs were written. Heavy metal was at the forefront of my performance-based output, but these little four-track songs were always there."

By 1993, Anselmo moved back to his hometown of New Orleans and his home became an instant magnet for local musicians and artists. "At ungodly hours, these old four-track songs took on an even newer life jamming with these cats. We learned a few of the songs and wrote several more, and soon we were recording under the moniker 'Body & Blood.' We wrote more songs, all recorded on a newer model four-track. It was fun. We did it for the vibe. And it was pleasing to break away from multi-tracking studios and heavy metal. Metal music consumed most of our time and lives. Those 'B&B' sessions were damned-near therapeutic."

Without a clear plan for the band, the project remained a periodic therapy session. "We kept things simple and just jammed when everyone was home and played our recordings for friends. Then I eventually moved again, Hurricane Katrina hit, and life sent all of us in different directions."

It was in 2012 when EN MINOR truly took shape. "[Stephen] "Schteve" [Taylor] was experimenting with some vibey stuff, and soon after began recording the sessions. This led to the current incarnation of EN MINOR. Together, we reworked a few of the old four-track songs and wrote several new ones in short order. These sessions are hypnotic and pulling. And we continue to write songs suitable for this project to this day. Ugly and beautiful, EN MINOR, isn't 'party music.' This is 'kill the party music.'"

"With EN MINOR, he's embracing a gravely vocal style of defiance and regret, singing songs from a lifetime of experience and hard lessons learned in the outlaw country tradition of Merle Haggard... The measured pace and acoustic instruments of his new project reflect a state of mind and a possible sign of maturity finally catching up with Anselmo at a time when addiction is now years behind him." - Revolver

"...Anselmo emoted with somber grace over beautiful ballads evoking his cover of Black Sabbath's 'Planet Caravan' with Pantera all the way back on Far Beyond Driven...it's a refreshing change of pace for Anselmo after many of his heavier outings these last few years." - MXDWN (Psycho Las Vegas 2019 recap)

"Phil Anselmo's low key new acoustic project dubbed 'depression core' was strangely invigorating. This was one of the most chill and memorable sets of the weekend." - Metal Injection (Psycho Las Vegas 2019 recap)

"Dressed in a suit and looking like a suave Mike Patton, Phil had the audience in the palm of his hand. We were willing to take whatever journey he wanted us on. We all knew Phil Anselmo had poetry in his heart but perhaps not to this great extent." - Janky Smooth (Psycho Las Vegas 2019 recap)

"When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out .... takes you on a journey into a dark fog-shrouded alley that is hauntingly irresistible. The music moves around and through you like the lazy hazy in an Amsterdam coffeeshop. EN MINOR have created a fantastic album that will surely be the soundtrack for a birthday party in a funeral parlor." - Metal Wani

"...a cohesive and emotionally devastating record. It's hard not to be entranced with the simple poetry of what they conjure up here. This record is in many ways unexpected from this particular group of guys, but their execution is flawless." - Two Guys Metal Reviews

EN MINOR To Release Debut Full-Length This September

EN MINOR To Release Debut Full-Length This September Via Housecore Records; Revolver Streams New Single + Preorders Available

Philip H. Anselmo's EN MINOR will release its long-awaited debut full-length, When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out, this September via Housecore Records.

An experimental and eclectic musical endeavor that finds Anselmo exploring a softer, graver vocal style, EN MINOR is an honest and deliberate change of pace delivering brooding tales of pain, regret, and sorrow. At once ugly and beautiful, EN MINOR features the collective talents of Stephen Taylor (Superjoint, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Wovenhand, 16 Horsepower), Kevin Bond (Superjoint, Christ Inversion, Artimus Pyledriver et al), Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod, Down, Superjoint), Calvin and Joiner Dover (The Dover Brothers), and Steve Bernal (former first cellist in the Temple Symphony Orchestra).

In advance of its release, Revolver is currently streaming first single, "Blue." Elaborates Anselmo, "We picked 'Blue' to release first because it features the whole band, as some songs don't have percussion. Also, the title of the record, When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out, is from a line in the song. Very fitting and haunting."

Adds Revolver, "Back in August of last year, we unveiled 'On the Floor,' the first song from the self-described 'depression-core' project, which finds the heralded heavy-metal vocalist - known for Pantera, Down, and Superjoint, among too many other bands to list here - exploring mellower, mostly acoustic, yet still dark and heavy musical territory not far flung from the gravelly odes of Nick Cave or Tom Waits. Today, we've teamed with Anselmo again to premiere a new EN MINOR cut, 'Blue,' the stark, stirring lead single off the group's forthcoming debut full-length, When The Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out..."

Stream EN MINOR's "Blue" at THIS LOCATION.

"[Stephen] 'Schteve' [Taylor] and I began experimenting with some vibey stuff, and soon after began recording the sessions.

"...Anselmo emoted with somber grace over beautiful ballads evoking his cover of Black Sabbath's 'Planet Caravan' with Pantera all the way back on Far Beyond Driven...it's a refreshing change of pace for Anselmo after many of his heavier outings these last few years. 'Mausoleum,' 'Jazz,' and closer 'On The Floor" all had a poignant beauty to them..." - MXDWN (Psycho Las Vegas recap)

"Phil Anselmo's low key new acoustic project dubbed 'depression core' was strangely invigorating. This was one of the most chill and memorable sets of the weekend." - Metal Injection (Psycho Las Vegas recap)

"Dressed in a suit and looking like a suave Mike Patton, Phil had the audience in the palm of his hand. We were willing to take whatever journey he wanted us on. We all knew Phil Anselmo had poetry in his heart but perhaps not to this great extent." - Janky Smooth (Psycho Las Vegas recap)
