Coming to DVD and Blu-Ray+4K on September 29 is the phenomenal documentary 'DIO: Dreamers Never Die'. Filmakers Don Argott and Damien Fenton take a deep dive into the life of metal legend Ronnie James Dio through interviews with those who knew DIO and through archival photos and concert footage.
I was fortunate enough to witness DIO perform live many times; with Black Sabbath, solo as DIO, and with Heaven and Hell. But as many times as I've seen DIO perform and through all the hours of my life spent listening to his dynamic voice, 'DIO: Dreamers Never Die' provides so much more in the way of personal and career information that I just never knew.
The list of people Argott and Fenton have sharing stories and insight into the life of DIO is mind-blowing. Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Vinny Appice, Sebastian Bach, Jack Black, Rob Halford are just a few of those that share why DIO was so iconic. Ronnie's beloved wife Wendy Dio opens up about the good and the bad they experienced in the music industry as well as in their life together.
The film starts with the early years of RJD from his family upbringing through his school years and his early musical interests. The bulk of the film is centered on Ronnie's music and how he started out with Ronnie and the Redcaps and made his way to Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, DIO, and Heaven and Hell.
Throughout the film the heartbreak and disappointment RJD persevered through is given it's due and proves just how strong and focused he was to perform his music. What is learned about Ronnie in this film makes the way his life ended even more devastating. Many will be brought to tears watching the end of this film.
I could have been a dreamer,
I could have been the one to fly.
could have been a dreamer,
'Cause dreamers never die.
