Parx Casino in Bensalem, PA was where E. Roland and his bandmates in Collective Soul set up shop for the evening treating the Philadelphia area crowd to a night of hits in celebration of the band's 25th anniversary.
My initial thought as I walked out of the venue was "why the hell was this the first time seeing Collective Soul live?". Thankfully when a band has incredible talent, devoted fans, continues to record new music, and has remained mostly intact it's NEVER too late to see them perform.
E Roland to me has one of the most underrated voices in rock but the man truly dominates, as proven with the band's latest release "Blood". Live, "Blood" songs "Now's the Time", "Observation of Thoughts", and the phenomenal "Right as Rain" were powerful and E Roland masterfully knocked them out of the park!
The hits...they sounded amazing. When you hear a sold out venue in unison sing "whoa, heaven let your light shine down" if that doesn't give you goosebumps you better check your pulse. "Shine", "December", "Precious Declaration", "Where The River Flows" and "The World I Know" lit up the night and was a reminder just how strong this band is.
I'm not embarrassed to say that two points in the show almost brought me to tears. "The World I Know" was performed with a slightly slower tempo than originally recorded and I could feel every word from E Roland. It was one of those times when seeing a band perform live felt like the most intimate of performances. Even more so was when E Roland invited an audience member to the stage. It was this woman's birthday and she was gifted a solo acoustic performance of the song "She Said". The crowd was silent as E Roland sang to this woman. Every word was so strong, every note of his gorgeous 12 string was felt. It really was something special.
This may have been my first time seeing Collective Soul live, but if they come around again I will make sure to be in attendance again.
